Health supplements for pets: what are the benefits and how can they help?

Naturally, we all want to keep our pets happy and healthy, but many owners are unaware that their pets may not be getting sufficient nutrients through their food alone. When we need a wellness boost, we take a vitamin or mineral supplement. Did you know we can do the same for our pets?

Clinically Proven Ingredients & Formulated by Vets

The DoggyRade range consists of functional health supplement products specially formulated to help dogs and cats feel their best. When given regularly, pet owners see noticeable benefits in their pets’ digestion and general performance and recovery, making them more resistant to illnesses.

Chicory Root

Chicory Root is a rich source of inulin, a wonderful prebiotic known for promoting the growth of healthy gut bacteria. It also helps reduce inflammation and improves mineral absorption. It acts as a prebiotic, meaning that it feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut. These helpful bacteria play a role in reducing inflammation, fighting harmful bacteria and improving mineral absorption. DoggyRade Prebiotic Chewies contain chicory root fibre, and currently are available in two original flavours and five superfood flavours discover the range here.

Taurine

Taurine is considered an essential amino acid in cats and they need large amounts of it in their diet. It is critical for normal vision, digestion, heart muscle function, to maintain normal pregnancy and fetal development and to maintain a healthy immune system. If taurine levels are deficient, the retinal cells of the eyes will eventually degenerate, which results in vision impairment. This is referred to as feline taurine retinopathy, or feline central retinal degeneration (FCRD). A deficiency of taurine will also lead to a weakening of the muscle cells in the heart, causing a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). KittyRade prebiotic drink contains taurine and is an excellent addition to your cat’s diet if you’re concerned that they may not be getting enough in their food.

Glutamic Acid

Glutamine is an amino acid derived from glutamic acid. Glutamine is the preferred energy substrate for the enterocyte (cells in the intestine) and as such it plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the gut barrier. It is also the preferred fuel source for other rapidly dividing cells such as lymphocytes and fibroblasts, especially during times of critical illness. DoggyRade has been specially formulated with glutamic acid to help dogs recover from illness. KittyRade and YummyRade, our tasty meal topper, also contain this important amino acid.

Glycine

Glycine has been shown to improve intestinal mucosal morphology and hasten their solution of diarrhea. Glycine also enhances the uptake of glucose from the gut. DoggyRade Pro, DoggyRade, KittyRade and YummyRade all contain glycine to help maintain cellular health in pets. It also can provide benefits for certain conditions such as cancer prevention and liver protection.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

FOS are prebiotics and naturally-occurring substances that provide beneficial effects on digestion through their activity in the large intestine. FOS are fermented in the colon to product short-chain fatty acids, which have important anti-inflammatory effects. FOS help to increase the concentrations of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium spp and Lactobacillus spp and may decrease concentrations of harmful bacteria such as Clostridium perfringens. Our prebiotics are human food grade and sourced from a highly reputable manufacturer based in Belgium and Germany. In fact, our particular grade of FOS is one of the few that is recommended for use in baby foods. The amount of FOS in our products is based on those amounts that have been shown to be effective in dogs and cats, and published in peer-reviewed journals.
